a beautiful tropical landmass covering 1666 square kilometres and lying around 35km off the Indian Ocean coastline ofTanzania, just north of the capital and main port of entry Dar es Salaam.
Zanzibar is a wonderful, romantic, historic and stunningly beautiful tropical island. It combines fantastically with safari and trekking options on the mainland and offers a very wide range of accommodation. There is a vast range of things to doon offer, notably some sensational diving, snorkelling and kite-surfing, as well as some superb historic and cultural activities.
The main potential downsides are that Zanzibar has become a very popular and relatively busy destination, which unfortunately now attracts a mass market packaged holiday crowd, meaning that some parts of the reason now need to be avoided. The island remains quite a challenging place to visit, there is a considerable problem with litter. Some people also cite the tidal nature of most of the beaches as being an issue.
